Fort Knox semiannual energy resilience readiness exercise planned for Oct. 13
FORT KNOX, Ky. — Fort Knox Directorate of Public Works Energy officials will conduct their semiannual energy resilience readiness exercise on Oct. 13 to test the post’s decentralized power generation systems.
Officials are asking the Fort Knox community to be prepared when the switches are flipped to stop commercial power at 8 a.m., testing Fort Knox’s ability to run independent operations. All areas, with the exception of some outlying range areas, will experience a brief outage at that time.
The outage is expected to last no more than about 15 minutes, but it will affect traffic lights and facility power during that time. Crews will be on hand to monitor, identify and quickly troubleshot any issues that may arise.
Fort Knox conducts regular testing as proof of operating dedicated generators and lighting systems independently during emergencies. The installation will continue independent operations until around 10 a.m., when engineers will switch back to the commercial power grid.
Officials say it is possible another power outage could occur at the end of the test, although unlikely. As a result, residents and employees are asked to avoid using electrical equipment from 7:55 to 8:15 a.m., and again around 10 a.m. This includes treadmills and other electrical exercise equipment, electric ovens and stoves, washers and dryers, and elevators.
If you are concerned about whether to use certain electrical items, consider turning them off in advance and back on after the commercial power is restored.
If a power outage lasts longer than 15 minutes, residents are encouraged to report it to Knox Hills maintenance at 502-799-6565.
Facility managers are asked to follow the operations order and route any work orders to Directorate of Public Works at 502-624-1171. Work order forms can be accessed at https://armymaintenance.com/arma.
