Protests Sweep Germany Over Renewable Energy Slowdown

(MENAFN) Tens of thousands of Germans flooded the streets across four major cities on Saturday, staging mass demonstrations against what environmental groups called a deliberate effort to obstruct the country's shift away from fossil fuels.

Coordinated rallies under the banner "Defend Renewable Energy!" drew crowds in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Cologne, organized by a broad coalition of environmental organizations pressing for an urgent acceleration of solar and wind expansion.

The coalition's call to action made its case in stark terms: "Escalating energy prices, geopolitical crises, and authoritarian regimes show us how risky fossil fuels are."

It further warned: "In light of rapidly rising energy prices resulting from the war in Iran and the increasingly severe consequences of the climate crisis, independence from fossil fuels is becoming an ever more critical factor in ensuring security and stability."

The groups directed sharp criticism at Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche and factions within her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, accusing them of deliberately obstructing the rollout of renewable infrastructure.

In Munich, protesters echoed those accusations, charging that Reiche was undermining the energy transition while continuing to favor fossil fuel interests.

Martin Geilhufe, state chairman of the Nature Conservation Union, delivered some of the sharpest condemnation of the day, denouncing Reiche's grid package as "part of a concerted all-out attack on nature, the environment, and the climate." He urged the federal government to stop suppressing the expansion of wind and solar power.

Organizers reported 24,000 demonstrators in Berlin and 12,000 in Munich, with a combined total of 80,000 participants recorded across all four cities.
